Rocket League launched on September 8, 2015, and across the decade since, Psyonix has shipped 37 numbered seasons — 14 Legacy seasons before the free-to-play transition, plus 23 in the modern Free-to-Play era. Modern seasons run about 91 days on average, but that pattern only goes back to 2022. Earlier in the game’s life, one season ran for a staggering 275 days, and the very first Free-to-Play cycle blew through in just 77. This is the complete record of every Rocket League season with verified start and end dates, durations, and the records that other lists skip.

How Rocket League Seasons Work

Rocket League seasons are competitive ranked cycles that bundle a fresh Rocket Pass, new in-game content, a ranked rewards window, and an end-of-season MMR soft reset. Each Free-to-Play-era season runs roughly 12 to 14 weeks — long enough for players to grind ranked placements and complete a 110-tier Rocket Pass, short enough to keep cosmetics rotating.

The structure has been stable since the September 2020 free-to-play transition: a new season launches the same day the previous one closes, the Premium Rocket Pass costs 1,000 Credits (about $10) and unlocks the full cosmetic line including a signature car body, and ranked rewards are gated by your peak rank during the season — not your rank at season close. That single design choice means a single good week of climbing can lock in a higher reward tier than a player’s final standing would suggest.

Pre-2020, the game ran on a different model entirely. The original Legacy seasons ran 3 to 9 months each, were focused almost exclusively on the ranked ladder, and had no Rocket Pass — those didn’t arrive until Rocket Pass 1 in September 2018. Cosmetics in the Legacy era were tied to Crates, the loot-box system that was eventually replaced by the Blueprint system in late 2019.

Legacy Era (Season 1 – Season 14)

Before the Free-to-Play transition, Rocket League ran on the original season system Psyonix shipped at the 2015 launch. There was no Rocket Pass and no cosmetic-driven content roadmap — these cycles existed almost entirely to support the competitive ladder. The longest Legacy seasons stretched for six to nine months.

Records & Stats

With ten and a half years of Rocket League seasons on record, the dataset is large enough to surface trends that competitor lists usually skip.

Longest Rocket League Seasons of All Time

RankSeasonDuration
1Legacy Season 3275 days
2Legacy Season 14182 days
3Legacy Season 1156 days
4Legacy Season 9147 days
5Legacy Season 6131 days

The longest Rocket League season ever, Legacy Season 3, ran for 275 days — from June 20, 2016 to March 22, 2017. That single season covers nearly nine months, longer than three modern Free-to-Play seasons stacked end to end. The top five longest seasons are all from the Legacy era, when Psyonix had not yet committed to the 12-to-14-week Rocket Pass cadence.

Shortest Rocket League Seasons of All Time

RankSeasonDuration
1F2P Season 177 days
2Legacy Season 1083 days
3F2P Season 784 days
3F2P Season 2084 days
5Legacy Season 585 days

The shortest Rocket League season on record is Free-to-Play Season 1 at 77 days — the very first cycle after the September 23, 2020 free-to-play launch. That short runtime was deliberate: Psyonix wanted a quick onboarding cycle for the wave of new players that arrived with the F2P transition, then settled into a longer cadence from Season 2 onward.

Average Season Duration by Era

EraSeasonsTotal DaysAverage
Legacy (1–14)141,840~131 days
Free-to-Play (1–21, completed)211,988~95 days
F2P recent (15–21)7643~92 days

The shift between eras is sharp: Legacy seasons averaged about 131 days, roughly 50% longer than Free-to-Play seasons at ~95 days. Within the F2P era, the picture is even tighter — the last seven completed seasons (Seasons 15 through 21) averaged just 92 days, basically a fixed 13-week competitive cycle. The era of unpredictable season length is over.

Is Rocket League’s Season Cadence Stabilizing?

Yes. Looking at the trend, recent Free-to-Play seasons have clustered tightly around 91 days — eleven of the last fourteen completed seasons (Seasons 8 through 21) ran for either 90, 91, or 92 days. The outliers are intentional content choices: Season 17 ran 100 days to span Psyonix’s December-to-March holiday window, and Season 20 at 84 days was Psyonix’s shortest cycle of the modern era. Total Rocket League Runtime

From the September 8, 2015 launch through the end of Season 22 on June 10, 2026, Rocket League will have been live for approximately 3,928 days — about 10 years and 9 months — across 36 numbered seasons.

What Happens When a Rocket League Season Ends

The end-of-season transition follows the same template every cycle. At the season-end timestamp — for Season 22, that’s June 10, 2026 at 17:00 UTC — Psyonix takes the matchmaking servers offline for a brief maintenance window, then brings them back up with the new season already active.

Ranked rewards are calculated from your peak rank during the season, not your rank at the moment of close. Reaching Platinum I at any point during the season locks in the Platinum reward tier (typically a goal explosion or animated banner), even if your displayed rank drops before season end. You must complete your placement matches to qualify for rewards — usually 10 matches in a given playlist.

MMR soft reset: Your competitive rating is not wiped at season end. Instead, it’s compressed toward the middle of the distribution. Grand Champion and Supersonic Legend players see the largest drops; Platinum and lower-ranked players barely move. After the reset, your displayed rank disappears until you complete a new round of placement matches, which typically place you 1–3 divisions below your previous peak. End-of-season ranked Reward Levels also reset, so any progress toward a higher division reward must be re-earned from zero.

Rocket Pass progress does not carry over between seasons. Any unclaimed Rocket Pass Premium tiers — including the signature car body, decals, and bonus XP — are lost permanently at the season-end timestamp. Premium Rocket Pass owners who pre-bought the next season’s Pass can spend leftover Tier Points, but base XP and progress reset to zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Rocket League seasons have there been?

There have been 37 Rocket League seasons total — 14 Legacy seasons (September 8, 2015 to September 23, 2020) plus 23 Free-to-Play-era seasons. The open interval is shown in the table; current timing is maintained on the Rocket League timer.

How long do Rocket League seasons last?

Modern Free-to-Play Rocket League seasons average about 95 days, with most recent seasons running a tight 12 to 14 weeks (90 to 100 days). Legacy seasons (2015–2020) ran much longer — averaging about 131 days, with several stretching past six months.

What was the longest Rocket League season?

The longest Rocket League season is Legacy Season 3, which ran for 275 days — from June 20, 2016 to March 22, 2017. That’s nearly nine months, more than triple the length of an average modern Rocket League season. The top five longest seasons are all from the Legacy era.

What was the shortest Rocket League season?

The shortest Rocket League season is Free-to-Play Season 1 at 77 days, running from September 23, 2020 to December 9, 2020. It was the first cycle after the free-to-play transition and was deliberately compressed to onboard new players quickly. The second shortest is Legacy Season 10 at 83 days.

When did Rocket League go free-to-play?

Rocket League went free-to-play on September 23, 2020, the same day Free-to-Play Season 1 launched. The transition replaced Legacy Season 14 mid-cycle and reset the season counter back to Season 1, which is why there are technically two Season 1s in Rocket League’s history.
